In 2013, VINTEC, the leading specialist in wine storage cabinets and pioneer of this niche appliance in Australia, celebrates its 15th anniversary – with a top Australian drop from its birth year.
A journey through time
Vintec Australia was founded in September 1998 by Jean-Marie SIMART, an Australian born in Paris and long-time wine aficionado. Previously a banker in Asia for 25 years, he decided to return home to Australia in 1998 to develop a wonderful new concept he had discovered in France, the climate-controlled wine cabinet.
Interestingly, a survey ordered at that time by the Australian wine industry had disclosed an average storage time of only seven days for any bottle of wine bought from bottle shops or wineries!
Did you know? Jean-Marie originally started his new venture with his garage serving as his first “warehouse” – importing hand-made Transtherm® wine cabinets from France. The first container, a modest 20 feet, arrived in February 1999.
From his garage, he began offering these high-end cellars to Australian connoisseurs and savvy wine collectors, and effectively created the market for these niche products which cost several thousand dollars apiece.
Witnessing how Australians were becoming increasingly knowledgeable about wine and the way to store it though, he saw a much broader appeal and potential in wine cabinets: for Jean-Marie, they represented the wine storage solution of the future for all wine enthusiasts, since they could be easily and elegantly installed into one’s home or apartment and keep one’s wines in pristine conditions, ready at-hand for serving and entertaining.
Today (15 years later), Vintec Australia remains the leader and specialist of the wine storage industry, offering to the market more than 40 different models under its two own brands, Transtherm® and Vintec®, with capacities from 26 to 4000+ bottles, prices from $600 to $35,000 and an array of innovative technologies and designs.
