What do celebrities Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, director of The Godfather Francis Ford Coppola and Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie all have in common?
Along with a number of other Tinsel town stars, they’re keen winemakers! Extending their talent for film and music to the wine cellar, these stars overlook vineyards in many wine regions around the world.
Here we have a look at some of the celebrities foraying into the winemaking business.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
Hollywood power couple Brad and Angelina purchased the 500-hectare Chateau Miraval in Provence, France, with the location noted to be the ‘summer residence’ of the couple and their children.
They enlisted the help of French wine producers Famille Perrin in 2012 to help with viticulture, winemaking and wine distribution, to deliver a host of wines in 2013 and 2014.
Pitt and Jolie released their first wine in March, the 2012 Miraval Cotes de Provence Rose, scoring 90 points (outstanding) on Wine Spectator’s 100-point scale.
Wine Spectator managing editor, Kim Marcus, wrote that in a blind tasting of Provencal roses in their New York office the wine was “refined and elegant”, with “pure flavours of dried berry and tangerine, and a focused finish with flint and spice notes”.
Good to know: You can expect to add more bottles from Chateau Miraval to your home wine cellar in August and September, with white and red varieties to come.
Golden Globe-winning actress Drew Barrymore established Barrymore Wines in honour of her family, with her travels throughout Italy inspiring her to create a Pinot Grigio.
Barrymore, a noted fan of crisp, fruity white wines, created the Pinot Grigio that reflects elements of her style and personality: “fresh, dynamic and fun”.
The pale straw colour Barrymore Pinot Grigio has tasting notes of fresh apricot and lively citrus flavours, and is made with grapes grown in Italy’s Triveneto area.
Note: The Barrymore 2011 Pinot Grigio was a gold medal winner at the 2012 Sunset International Wine Competition, and was pointed out for its striking minerality and floral aromas.
Fergalicious Black Eyed Peas vocalist Fergie also ties family with her winemaking venture, Ferguson Crest.
“I can’t think of a more perfect way to honor my family’s heritage and carry on that tradition of warmth and generosity than to share with you Ferguson Crest’s collection of wines, the latest gift from my father’s extraordinarily green thumb.”
Fergie founded Ferguson Crest in 2006 with her father Pat, at the highest point of Solvang in California’s Santa Ynez Valley.
The family-run boutique winery has released a collection of reds and whites including their signature varietal, Ferguson Crest 2010 Syrah with notes of chocolate, graphite, black pepper and cassis.
Ferguson Crest also features a special red wine blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Grenache and Merlot to create the complex 2011 Fergalicious vintage.
Aussie rockers AC/DC were also in on the wine buzz, creating varietals for their fans and oenophilists with the help of New South Wales’ Warburn Estate.
AC/DC The Wine was sourced from southeast Australia and Marlborough in New Zealand, with the collection featuring Highway to Hell Cabernet Sauvignon, Back in Black Shiraz, Thunderstruck Chardonnay, Hells Bells Sauvignon Blanc and You Shook Me All Night Long Moscato!
Francis Ford Coppola
Director of The Godfather Francis Ford Coppola established a “wine wonderland” in Californian wine country, featuring food, wine, music, games, dancing, swimming and performances.
It’s a place to “celebrate the love of life” Coppola states, with numerous wines on showcase at the Francis Ford Coppola Winery.
Note: Coppola offers wines such as the luxurious Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, Archimedes, the Su Yuen collection to suit Asian cuisine, the Director’s Cut range of Zinfandel, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, as well as the “pride of the company”, the Diamond Collection.
