Man, woman or Ziggy Stardust… it’s all about passion for wine

For International Women’s Day 2019, we asked two of our #womeninwine - Sharon Ooi, Vintec Club Manager in Singapore, and Helen Woolley, Global Product Portfolio Director - their thoughts on working in the wine business.

Does gender make a difference in your job?

Helen: Man, women or Ziggy Stardust – it doesn’t matter! Being passionate about your field, pursuing excellence and delivering a great consumer experience is what makes the difference. I am proud to be a part of the team across the globe whose mission is to create the very best wine cabinets.

Sharon: It is interesting working in an industry largely dominated by men. But, to be taken seriously whether male or female, you need put in the hours, know your job and don’t expect preferential treatment either way.

Helen: Women are underrepresented in the wider wine industry but this is changing with an ever-increasing number of women trailblazing a career in wine. There are definitely more men than women in my immediate working circle, but likewise there are more French than English! Gender should not make a difference either way, it’s about passion for the job!

What’s your advice to other women looking to follow your career path?

Helen: Be passionate about the product, don’t settle for mediocre. Be a team player and always be a positive energy. Communicate, communicate, communicate. Desire to leave the place better than you found it.

Sharon: Be professional but don’t be a ‘yes’ woman, or feel intimidated to have an opinion or to speak up. Don’t try to be a man; appreciate your strengths and embrace your qualities.
